Two diaries, one leather bound and one cardboard covered, as well as four loose leaf pages kept by Joseph Shaw, missionary, of his travels to and time at the Mission Station at Yelta, Cooper's Creek and Darling River in 1862 and 1867. The leather bound diary itself is for the year 1868 (142 p.) (H 16553); both the cardboard covered diary and the loose pages contain notes of a trip from Melbourne to Yelta, 1862 (49 p.) (H 11979) and (8 p.) (H 16554), respectively. Note the 1862 diary was originally accessioned twice under both H 11979 and H 3723. A photocopy of these diaries is held in Box 20/3 (b).

Rev. Joseph Shaw came to Australia in 1862 and was appointed Missionary to the Aborigines of Australia on October 17th, 1862. He undertook Christian missionary work with Aborigines at Yelta, a Church of England mission near the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers, from 1862-1866. Later he served at the Poonindie Mission in South Australia as Assistant Manager; at Coranderrk Mission, Vic. from 1882-1885; and as a Superintendent of Coranderrk, 1885-1908.
